Baylor's Christian Morgan 'Playing Everything on the Back End'
Baylor senior safety Christian Morgan did not hesitate when the media asked him about playing numerous positions in the secondary for the Bears football team in 2022.
In fact, Morgan is more than willing to jump into that role.
"Since Al [Walcott] emerged more in Fall camp, I'm playing more of the high safety roles, freeing the weak safeties but ultimately I'm playing everything on the back end," Morgan said. "I'm just keeping my mind open to playing everything in the back end, so if somebody goes down I can play it and slide into that role. I can play star, free, weak, wherever I need to play."
A 6-1, 211-pound, fifth-year player out of Houston, Texas, Morgan is excited about the defense the Bears are fielding this upcoming season.
"Secondary's looking real good," Morgan said. "I think we're just building on the momentum we had last year. I think we were pretty solid last year and I think we're just trying to get better every day like coach [Dave] Aranda says."
Morgan, who has appeared in 45 career games with 21 starts for the Bears, firmly believes Walcott can step into the role that Jalen Pitre held before being taken by the Houston Texans in the 2022 NFL Draft.
"Most definitely he has the talent," Morgan said. "It's crazy because when I watch Al, I do see a lot of Pitre in him. Just a bigger version of him. Really instinctive, really fast, playmaker, really good ball skills, complete package. He's going to fit in perfectly."
So how does Morgan feel this year's defensive unit compares with last year's squad?
"It's tough to say because I feel like these two groups are completely different," Morgan said. "Last year's group really came in every day and we worked. So I'm not going to say this group is going to be better. We've just got to come out and have got to work every day. We have high standards that we need to achieve."
