Baylor to Hire Oregon State RB Coach AJ Steward
Following the exit of the Baylor Bears' top assistants, running backs coach Justin Johnson, questions began to swirl on who would replace the now-Texas Tech-bound coach.
And on Tuesday, the Bears seem to have found the answer to that question, with reports surfacing that Baylor will hire Oregon State running backs coach AJ Steward to the position.
Steward now heads to Waco after two seasons in Corvallis with the Beavers.
Under Steward, the Beavers ranked fourth in the Pac-12 and 28th in the country in rushing in 2022, averaging 196.46 yards per game.
In 2021, the Beavers were even better, ranking No. 3 in the Pac-12 and No. 20 in the country, averaging 212.31 yards per game.
By comparison, the Bears ranked 43rd in the country and sixth in the Big 12 in 2022, averaging 182.38 yards per game.
The Beavers also had 36 rushing touchdowns in 2022, to the Bears' 34.
Before heading to Corvallis, Steward also had stops at BYU and Arizona, and spent five seasons as the running backs coach for the Rice Owls from 2012 to 2017.
As a player, Steward was a tight end at Kansas, playing in 37 career games.
