The Boise State men’s basketball team kept its NCAA Tournament at-large hopes alive Wednesday night with an 86-78 Mountain West Conference victory over New Mexico.

Alvaro Cardenas, Pearson Carmichael and Tyson Degenhart all had career nights for the Broncos (18-8, 10-5), who are up to No. 49 in the KenPom rankings after the win.

According to KenPom, Boise State ranks 45th nationally in offensive rating and 63rd in defensive rating. The Broncos have the MWC’s second-best offense while ranking third in defense.

New Mexico (22-5, 14-2), the MWC leader in KenPom at No. 39, had its eight-game winning streak snapped by Boise State. The Lobos hold a one-game advantage over KenPom No. 42 Utah State (23-4, 13-3) in the MWC standings.

San Diego State (18-6, 11-4), No. 41 in KenPom, is tied with No. 69 Colorado State (17-9, 11-4) for third place.

ESPN’s Joe Lunardi had three MWC teams included in his most recent NCAA Tournament field of 68: New Mexico (nine seed), Utah State (nine seed) and San Diego State (11 seed). Boise State was not among Lunardi’s first eight out.
