Boston College Basketball Teams Open Seasons With Pair of Wins, The Rundown: November 5, 2024
Boston College had opening night for both men’s and women’s basketball on Monday night, hosting a pair of mid major squads.
Both teams welcomed a decent bit of newcomers looking to bounce back from 2023-24 seasons.
The ladies started the evening, beginning the team’s season against the Lafayette Leopards of the Patriot League. The ladies got off to a cold start, trailing after the opening quarter 14-9, but adjusted and began to heat up from that point on.
The lady Eagles outscored the Jaguars 76-41 in the final 30 minutes with a final result being a decisive 85-55 victory and a 1-0 start.
Four starters broke double figures for BC, with transfer redshirt senior forward Kennedi Jackson leading the way with 20 points and a team-high 13 rebounds in her debut.
Returning junior guard T'yana Todd added 17 of her own and the team as a whole forced 21 turnovers en route to its dominant opening night.
Head coach Joanna Bernabei-McNamee was pleased with the team's overall second half effort.
“I thought the second half was just really who we are and who we want to be," she said following the victory.
Things were not as easy-going for the men, as it took a complete team effort down the stretch to put away The Citadel Bulldogs. The Eagles took a nine-point lead into the half, but could not stretch their lead at all in the second and played in mostly a single digit game.
Redshirt sophomore guard Donald Hand Jr., was the story of the night for BC. After averaging just five points and one rebound last year, the 6'5'' guard put up 22 points and ten rebounds to lead the way. His 4-for-14 shooting night summed up the team's struggles on the night, as it shot just 38-percent from the field and 27-percent from three.
Head coach Earl Grant spoke about the missed opportunities his team had to expand its lead in the second half.
"We had it at a level where we could open the game up, wasn't able to capitalize on it," he said. “So you learn from it, and then you try to get better from what you learn and get to the next game."
It's difficult to take any major conclusions away from mid major openers, but one thing is for sure, BC hoops are back and both teams are 2-0.
