Boston College Men’s Basketball Gives Up 103 Points in Loss to SMU

The Eagles record their fifth loss of the season at the hands of the Mustangs.

The Boston College Eagles (7-5, 0-2 ACC) men’s basketball team lost its fifth game of the season to the SMU Mustangs (10-2, 2-0 ACC) 103-77 in its conference home opener on Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles got off to a quick 11-6 lead after opening the contest making three of their first four shot attempts and four of their first six free throw attempts.

After a small back-and-forth battle, the Mustangs went on a 27-10 run that lasted nearly ten minutes. Although Boston College ended the half outscoring SMU 9-7 in the last 3:30, the Mustangs went into halftime with a 47-40 lead.

To start the last 20 minutes of play, both teams came out aggressive. The Eagles cut their deficit to as little as three points with 14:53 left in the game, but could not do enough defensively to stop the Mustangs down the stretch.

Since the 14:53 mark, SMU finished the contest on a 43-20 run which was aided by the Mustangs’ total 52 points in the paint.

The game was a homecoming for SMU forward Matt Cross, a Beverly, Mass., native. The senior tallied 20 points and eight rebounds which led the team as well as three assists.

For the Eagles, guard Donald Hand Jr., led the team with 22 points.

Next up, Boston College hosts Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday, Dec. 28 in its final game of the year. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. ET on ACC Network.
