AJ Dillon Isn't Paying Attention To Stats, Just Wants To Help Team
Don't tell A.J. Dillon that NC State had the fifth best rushing defense in the country. "As a whole, as a whole offense, I feel like we really showed that it doesn't really matter who we line up against or what statistical ratings or anything that people have" he told reporters after today's 45-24 win, "we're going to come with everything we've got."
And that is exactly what he did, after the win all the talk was about the dynamic duo in the backfield, the 240lb tandem of David Bailey and AJ Dillon who combined for over 400 yards against a defense that had allowed a total of 400 yards all season. The backs were electric combining for five touchdowns, and carrying BC's offense. NC State's vaunted rushing defense looked hapless as Dillon/Bailey bowled over them over and over again, failing to find any answer .
But it wasn't just the backs, it was a whole team effort, Steve Addazio was effusive about the play of his team "our offensive line and tight ends, I thought they did a fabulous job. Those backs were running through contact, running for plus yards, kind of unstoppable looking, and very, very proud of that. Just super proud of our football team".
But all the talk should be about Dillon, who now sits 75 yards short of the all time record of career rushing yards in BC history. After his fifth straight 100 yard rushing game, Dillon is approaching legendary back Andre Williams whose 3,739 yards is the most rushing yard by an Eagle.
"I'm sure you'll talk to A.J. I'm sure what he's going to tell you is what matters is his team, his teammates, and being able to do what he has to do to help our team win." said head coach Steve Addazio. "He's that kind of guy, centered guy, and it's going to be all about one week at a time, get prepared, and move forward. But right now it's about this game and about the focus of our team on this game."
"If we can play like that, we can play with anybody." explained AJ Dillon after the game. But his words might be prophetic, because the Eagles now have to prepare for the Clemson Tigers a potential playoff team next week in Death Valley. Can Dillon break the record against the Tigers. If you ask him it doesn't really matter.
"I made it a point not to care about individual stats and individual numbers and just be able to help the team in every way I could. That's something I do hold near and dear." he told reporters after the game. "As far as this, the career records coming up, I mean, you look at the running history at BC, you see great backs, great offensive lines. So I mean, even this time that I've been, like been here, just being named -- mentioned with the names that have come before me, it's an honor."
