Boston College Football Head Coach Bill O'Brien on Possible NFL Return 'I'm Happy at BC'
The Boston College Eagles football program has officially closed the books on the first year of the Bill O’Brien era.
In his debut season in Chestnut Hill, the 55-year-old led the team to a 7-6 overall record and an appearance in the Pinstripe Bowl where the Eagles lost 20-15 to Nebraska on Dec. 28.
Although the season did not end the way O’Brien had hoped, his leadership helped the program to a couple of milestones that show the program is moving in a positive, upward direction.
Boston College’s seven wins in the regular season was the first time that the program had hit that mark since 2018. Also, the team’s bowl eligibility marked the eighth time in nine seasons that the Eagles qualified to go bowling.
On Tuesday, O’Brien made a guest appearance on The Adam Schefter Podcast where he was asked if he would ever consider going back to the NFL.
“I love BC, Adam. I really appreciate what BC’s done for me,” said O’Brien. “BC’s made a big commitment to football here. You can never say never. I’m not someone that can forecast the future and things like that, but I like where we’re at at BC, I like our future.
Look it didn’t end, this season, [the way we wanted],” said O’Brien. “We lost to Nebraska in a bowl game, but we had a winning record, we won some big games here, we’ve got a lot of talent coming back next year, so I’m really excited about what’s going on at Boston College and the people here, Blake James, the athletic director, Father Leahy, the president, they’ve been very supportive of what we’re doing here. So, I’m happy at BC.”
When asked if he would listen to a team if they requested to speak to him, the Dorchester, Mass., native emphasized his feelings about being at The Heights, but did not completely rule out the idea.
“To me, in my career, you always have to be able to listen and think about what’s best for your family and those things, but again, like I said, I’m very, very happy at Boston College,” said O’Brien.
