Hunter Long Named To Mackey Award Watchlist
Boston College tight end Hunter Long was named to the Mackey Award Watchlist this week. The award given out by the Mackey Selection Committee honors the nation's top tight end in the country. The award is given out at the end of the season during the College Football Awards show.
In 2019, the award went to Harrison Bryant, a tight end out of Florida Atlantic. The award has been given out since 2000, and a Boston College player has never won it. Check out the other nominees for 2020 below (via Mackey Award website):
Hunter Long, came to Chestnut Hill out of Exeter, New Hampshire following as the prototypical BC story. He was under recruited, and only held one major Power 5 offer, the Eagles. But like others who came before him, Long has blazed his own trail to become one of the most exciting and dynamic tight ends in the nation.
Over the past two seasons, Long has had some exciting plays. After redshirting his freshman year, he had four receptions for 104 yards and two touchdowns in 2018. But for most of that season he was buried on the depth chart by future NFLer Tommy Sweeney.
Long, a junior had a strong 2019 when he finished the season leading the Eagles with 509 yards receiving. He also had two touchdowns, including a big one against Louisville. With dynamic speed, good hands and size, Long is a rare breed at tight end. A solid blocker, he is incredibly dangerous in the pass game. With a new offensive coordinator and scheme, Long may be used more as a target in the passing game.
Other watchlist nominees:
Max Richardson: Bednarik Award
David Bailey: Doak Walker Award
