No. 2 Boston College Men’s Hockey Falls to UConn
The No. 2 Boston College Eagles (7-2, 2-1 HE) men’s hockey team snapped its six-game winning streak with a 5-4 loss to the UConn Huskies (6-5-1, 3-4-1 HE) on Friday night.
The Eagles struck first with a goal by defenseman Aidan Hreshuck at the 4:38 mark of the opening period with help from defenseman Eamon Powell and center Jake Sondreal. Boston College went into the first intermission with the one-goal advantage, however had a second period collapse.
UConn scored three unanswered goals in the middle frame by forwards Hudson Schandor, Kaden Shahan, and Tristian Fraser. After the third score, Eagles goalie Jacob Fowler was ejected from the contest for a major roughing penalty and a game misconduct for throwing a punch. Jan Korec played in the net for the remainder of the game in place of Fowler.
The Eagles cut their deficit in half 31 seconds into the third period with a power-play goal by right winger Ryan Leonard, but UConn responded with a goal at the 9:05 minute mark by defenseman Thomas Messineo.
The final two minutes of the contest was a back-and-forth battle that the Huskies came out on top of. Eagles left winger Andre Gasseau and Hreshuck both scored goals in that time frame, however the Huskies added a final score to the board with an empty net goal by forward Ryan Tattle with under a minute left to ice the game.
Next up, Boston College stays on the road to take on Providence on Tuesday night. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. ET.
