The No. 2 Boston College Eagles (4-1) men’s hockey team defeated the No. 10 St. Cloud State Huskies (6-2) 4-1 in the opening game of the series on Friday night.

The Eagles struck first late in the opening frame with a goal by right winger Will Vote, his fourth of the season. Left winger Gabe Perreault extended the lead on a power play goal early in the second period to give Boston College the 2-0 advantage.

However, the Huskies fought back in an active second period.

St. Cloud State responded and cut its deficit in half with a score by left winger Daimon Gardner at the 6:52 mark in the second. Right winger Gavyn Thoreson looked to have scored the game tying goal at the 14:59 mark, however it was overturned due to goalie interference after a challenge by Eagles head coach Greg Brown which kept the score at 2-1.

Penalties plagued both teams in the period as the Eagles were called for five and the Huskies were called for four. Five of the nine combined penalties were completed at the same time, but that didn’t stop Boston College from extending its lead back to two goals in that time frame as left winger Teddy Stiga scored a short-handed goal at the 18:28 mark of the second to go up 3-1 while St. Cloud State was on a power play.

Perreault iced the contest for Boston College with an empty net goal late in the third period to secure the 4-1 victory.

The Eagles will look to sweep the series on Saturday night. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. ET on NCHC.tv.
