BYU Basketball's Ceiling is a 5-Seed in the Big 12 Tournament
On Wednesday night, BYU basketball lost a tough game on the road at no. 6 Iowa State. Coming into this week, BYU had a chance to get a top four seed in the Big 12 tournament. With the loss to Iowa State and the rest of the results around the league, BYU's ceiling is now a 5-seed in the Big 12 tournament.
Here are the updated Big 12 standings. If the season ended today, BYU would be the 6-seed in the Big 12 tournament and they would face the winner of Cincinnati/West Virginia in the second round.
So what needs to happen for BYU to be the 5-seed? Two things:
- BYU needs to beat Oklahoma State on Saturday. There's no scenario where BYU could be the 5-seed with a loss to Oklahoma State.
- Kansas needs to lose on the road at Houston. If Kansas pulls off the upset on the road at Houston, BYU's ceiling would be the 6-seed.
If BYU beats Oklahoma State and Kansas loses to Houston, BYU and Kansas would be tied in the Big 12 standings. BYU owns the tiebreaker over Kansas, therefore BYU would be the 5-seed and Kansas would be the 6-seed.
There's also a potential for a four-way tie for fourth in the Big 12 standings between BYU, TCU, Kansas, and Texas Tech. In that scenario, Texas Tech would be the 4-seed, BYU would be the 5-seed, Kansas would be the 6-seed, and TCU would be the 7-seed.
In the scenario of a three-way tie for fifth between BYU, Kansas, and TCU, BYU would win the tiebreaker and would be the 5-seed.
