No. 21 BYU Basketball Gets Much-Needed Win Over Texas
On Saturday afternoon, no. 21 BYU basketball got a much-needed win over the Texas Longhorns. Five BYU players scored in double figures on their way to a 84-72 victory. With the win, BYU improved to 3-4 in conference play and 15-5 overall.
This was a critical win for a BYU team that's been competitive in every conference game, but has struggled to close games. BYU controlled the game in the second half and never really allowed Texas to get back in the game.
BYU dominated this game with length. The Cougars outscored Texas 40-26 in the paint. BYU had seven blocks while Texas only had two blocks. The Cougars held star Texas guard Max Abmas to just 12 points on 4/12 shooting. After the Longhorns got out to a scorching-hot start, BYU's defense held Texas in check the rest of the game.
The Cougars were led in scoring by Noah Waterman and Jaxson Robinson who had 17 points each. Waterman played his best game of conference play, shooting 7/11 from the floor and grabbing 3 rebounds.
Robinson, who struggled with shot selection against Houston, made great decisions and was very efficient from the floor. Robinson was 8/11 from the field and 1/2 from three.
Foussyeni Traore played his best game in conference play. Traore had 16 points on 6/7 from the field.
Dallin Hall did a masterful job running the BYU offense. He only shot it twice, but he was 2/2 and he was 4/4 from the free throw line. He was +16 on the night, a team high.
Spencer Johnson and Richie Saunders had 11 points each. Saunders continues to make winning plays week in and week out.
The Cougars have a bye on Tuesday before travelling to Morgantown to take on West Virginia next Saturday.
