The Big 12 Unveils the Women's Basketball Tournament Bracket

The BYU women's basketball team has a first-round bye in the conference tournament

On Sunday, the Big 12 released the bracket for the 2024 women's basketball tournament. After a 6-12 record in conference play, BYU earned a no. 10 seed in the conference tournament. BYU will get a bye in the first round and will face no. 7 Kansas in the second round. BYU and Kansas will tipoff on Friday evening at 4:30 PM MT.

Of the four newcomers to the conference, BYU was the only team that earned a first-round bye.

BYU and Kansas played each other twice during the regular season. Kansas got the better of BYU in both matchups. On 1/31, BYU traveled to Lawrence and lost to Kansas 53-67. The second matchup took place in Provo. Kansas held on to beat BYU 70-62.

The winner of BYU-Kansas will advance to the quarterfinals to take on no. 2 Texas. BYU faced Texas only once this season, in the final game of the regular season. Texas beat BYU in Austin 46-71.

BYU women's basketball is led by senior forward Lauren Gustin. Gustin averages an impressive 17.3 points and 15.4 rebounds per game.

After Gustin, this BYU basketball team is young. BYU's second and third leading scorers are true freshmen guards Kailey Woolston and Amari Whiting. Woolston averages 13.4 points per game and is one of the best three-point shooters in the conference. Woolston shoots 45.6% from three.

Amari Whiting is the daughter of BYU's head coach Amber Whiting. Amari averages 10.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game.
