The Indianapolis Colts Select BYU OL Blake Freeland
The fourth round of the NFL Draft is underway. On Saturday, the Indianapolis Colts selected BYU offensive tackle Blake Freeland with the 106th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Freeland will be tasked with protecting the Colts' first round pick Anthony Richardson. At BYU, Freeland was one of the best pass-blocking tackles in the country in his four years as a starter. In over 1,400 pass-blocking snaps, Freeland allowed just two sacks.
Freeland turned heads when he recorded a 37" vertical at the NFL Combine. That is the highest mark by an offensive lineman since the NFL started tracking combine data in 2003. It surpassed the previous record of 36.5" set by Tristan Wirfs in 2020. Wirfs went on to be drafted in the first round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and he was named a first-team All-Pro in 2021 and 2022.
Freelandalso excelled in other areas like the 40-yard dash. Freeland ran a 4.98 which ranked third among offensive lineman. Georgia offensive tackle Broderick Jones ranked first with a 4.97 and Oklahoma offensive tackle Anton Harris ranked second with a time of 4.98.
In the broad jump, Freeland ranked first with a broad jump of 10'0". That was a full five inches better than the next best jump of 9'7", recorded by former Northwestern offensive lineman Peter Skoronski.
In the 10-yard split, Freeland ranked first with a time of 1.68. Utah's Braeden Daniels ranked second with a time of 1.71.
