On Thursday, BYU fullback/tight end Masen Wake announced that he was retiring from football. Wake wrote on social media, "After many thoughts and prayers, I have decided to step away from football. I am excited for what the future holds for me and for BYU football." Wake thanked his teammates, the fans, the coaching staff, and his family in his announcement.

Rumors surfaced earlier this week that Wake had suffered an injury during Fall camp. He didn't confirm those rumors directly, but his decision to retire during camp indicates those rumors were likely true.

Wake appeared in 30 games over the last four seasons for BYU. He was a fan favorite that was known as the player that would hurdle players in the open field. He impacted the BYU offense in various ways as a blocker, receiver, and a ball carrier. He finished his BYU career with 304 receiving yards and four total touchdowns.

Wake had a unique skillset that will be difficult replicate in BYU's offense. The Cougars will turn to returning players like Mason Fakahua, Anthony Olsen, and Ethan Erickson to replace Wake's production. BYU also welcomed a handful of new tight ends that will look to capitalize on the opportunity for early playing time. Junior college transfer Ray Paulo and former four-star recruit Jackson Bowers fit that description.

BYU is in the middle of the second week of Fall camp. The Cougars kick off the football season on September 2nd against Sam Houston State.
