BYU Has a Quarterback Competition on its Hands Before the Regular Season Finale

BYU head coach Kalani Sitake said BYU's two quarterbacks will compete for the starting job against Oklahoma State

After starting the first eight games of the season at quarterback, senior Kedon Slovis hasn't played for BYU since the Texas game. Junior Jake Retzlaff has started the last three games in Slovis' place while he recovers from injury. With one regular season remaining, BYU needs one more win to reach bowl eligibility.

According to head coach Kalani Sitake, BYU's two quarterbacks will compete for the starting job this week. “Going into this week, it’s about who’s going to help us put points on the board, extend drives and convert for first downs," Sitake said. "That’s the goal. Kedon [Slovis] hasn’t been healthy but he’s been practicing. He [and Jake Retzlaff] have been competing against each other. Whoever gives us the best chance will be the guy taking the first snap. That’s not to say the other one’s eliminated from being in the game.”

With Jake Retzlaff under center, BYU's run game has made great strides. Against Oklahoma, the Cougars dominated on the ground, running for 217 yards on 5.7 yards per carry. The passing game, however, has not been as productive under Retzlaff. Retzlaff is throwing for just 162 yards per game and turnovers have been a major problem. Retzlaff has thrown three interceptions and lost two fumbles in three games.

With Kedon Slovis under center, BYU's rushing attack was non-existent. Without a running threat under center, opposing defenses didn't respect the quarterback in read option situations and BYU was consistently forced into third and long situations. Slovis, however, has been more productive through the air than Retzlaff. Slovis has thrown for 215 yards per game.
