BYU Offers Transfer DL Joey Slackman

Slackman is a veteran defensive lineman from the Ivy League

Last year, BYU brought in more than 20 transfers in preparation for its first year in the Big 12. Some of those transfers like Kedon Slovis, Eddie Heckard, Jackson Cravens, and Kamden Garrett played major roles for BYU this season. Other transfers didn't live up to the expectations placed on them when they signed.

While it's unclear exactly how many transfers will bring in for the 2024 season, the Cougars will rely on the transfer portal once again to fill a few key positions. It will be important, however, that they hit a high batting average on those transfers. The Cougars don't have as many scholarships to work with, so each spot is important.

On Monday, BYU got an early start to recruiting the transfer portal when they offered Penn transfer Joey Slackman. Slackman, a graduate transfer, has one season of eligibility remaining. In his Penn career, he played in 28 games and he tallied 115 tackles, 25 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles.

The Cougars offered Slackman a scholarship on the same day that he entered the transfer portal. As of this article, he has received competing offers from UConn, Pitt, Houston, Rutgers, and Illinois.

The interior defensive line will be one of BYU's greatest positions of need for the 2024 season. BYU is set to lose both starters, Jackson Cravens and Atunaisa Mahe, to graduation following the 2023 season.
