BYU Dismisses Two Offensive Staff Members

The Cougars won't retain at least two of the coaches on the offensive staff

At least two members of the BYU offensive staff won't be retained for next season, BYU spokesperson Brett Pyne confirmed on Monday morning. Offensive line coach Darrell Funk and tight ends coach Steve Clark will not be returning next season. He also confirmed that no other staff members have been dismissed at this time.

Changes to the offensive staff were expected after BYU finished 118th in total offense this season.

Steve Clark has been on the staff since 2016 when Kalani Sitake was hired at BYU. Clark has been one of the best recruiters on the staff - BYU will need to find a replacement that at least matches or exceeds Clark's production on the recruiting trail. Recruiting is one of the most critical things an assistant coach has to do at BYU.

Darrell Funk was hired to replace Eric Mateos when he left BYU to join Jeff Grimes at Baylor.

While the hiring process at BYU is typically slower than most major universities, Aaron Roderick will work quickly to hire their replacements before the early signing period.

As of this writing, the defensive staff will be retained for next season. That was expected, as BYU's defense made improvements compared to last year.
