BYU Quarterback Kedon Slovis Throws Four Touchdowns in Win Over Southern Utah
All eyes were on the offense when BYU faced Southern Utah on Saturday. After scoring only 14 points against Sam Houston State in week one, the BYU offense bounced back with a 41-point performance against Southern Utah.
BYU quarterback Kedon Slovis threw for 348 passing yards and 4 touchdowns to just 1 interception. Slovis also ran for a touchdown late in the third quarter, finishing with five touchdowns on the afternoon.
Slovis' first touchdown of the day was a 20-yard strike to tight end Isaac Rex late in the first quarter. His second touchdown came just a few minutes later when he found a wide open Kean Hill in the endzone.
His third touchdown pass went to Darius Lassiter on a well-designed screen play. Lassiter took the pass 42 yards to the house.
His fourth and final touchdown pass was perhaps his best of the day. Slovis navigated the pocket, bought some time, and found Chase Roberts for the 39-yard touchdown pass.
That touchdown gave BYU a 41-10 lead and the Cougars put in third-string quarterback Cade Fennegan to finish the game. Southern Utah scored another touchdown late in the game and BYU won 41-16.
Tight end Isaac Rex led all receivers with 112 yards on 4 receptions. Chase Roberts caught 6 passes totaling 84 yards. Darius Lassiter finished with 73 yards on 5 receptions.
This is the kind of performance that Slovis was capable of early in his college career. When he signed with the Cougars last December, BYU offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick believed he could help Slovis return to his productive form. The real test will come next week when BYU travels to Arkansas to take on the Razorbacks.
On Saturday, the BYU offense took a definitive step in the right direction.
