BYU Running Back LJ Martin 'Will Play' Against Iowa State

Martin hasn't played in the last two games for BYU

On Wednesday, BYU offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick provided injury updates for a few key players on offense. Among those was an injury update for BYU standout true freshman LJ Martin.

"LJ was dressed last week but just wasn't quite ready," Roderick said when asked about Martin. "He'll play this week."

Martin leads BYU in rushing this year despite missing the last two games due to injury. He has 438 rushing yards, averaging 4.6 yards per carry, and he has five total touchdowns. BYU's offense struggled to run the ball against West Virginia. Having Martin back in the fold would boost BYU's rushing attack.

Roderick also provided an update on offensive lineman Paul Maile. Maile missed the game against WVU and Caleb Etienne replaced him in the lineup. "Hoping to get him back...we missed him dearly," Roderick said. "Paul is a good player, we missed him last week."

BYU is also "hoping" they get wide receiver Kody Epps and Paul Fitzgerald back. Fitzgerald was not available last week and Kody Epps left the game with an injury.

On Wednesday, BYU offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick announced that Jake Retzlaff will start at quarterback for BYU against Iowa State. Retzlaff made his first career start last week against West Virginia, replacing an injured Kedon Slovis.

"Right now, we're planning on Jake starting," Roderick said. "Kedon's improving. He made a few throws today. He's healing but he's not all the way there yet and we're unsure if he'll be available on Saturday or not."
