BYU to Start Jake Retzlaff at Quarterback Against Oklahoma
BYU will start Jake Retzlaff at quarterback against the Oklahoma Sooners, BYU Sports Nation announced on Saturday morning. This will be Retzlaff's third consecutive start for BYU. In two games, Retzlaff has thrown for 314 yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions. He has also run for 90 yards in those two games.
BYUtv's Spencer Linton noted that Slovis is available in emergency situations.
BYU's ability to keep this game competitive rests firmly on Retzlaff's shoulders. If he plays like he did against West Virginia, BYU can beat the spread in this game. If he plays like he did against Iowa State, the game could get ugly quickly.
Retzlaff, who was the lone bright spot in the loss to West Virginia, struggled mightily against Iowa State. Retzlaff was 10/27 for 104 yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions. His mobility was a benefit to the BYU offense, but he struggled to see the field and he missed some key throws.
When BYU head coach Kalani Sitake met with the media earlier this week, he said Slovis is "our guy" when healthy. "He practiced last week," Sitake said. "He's still banged up, not 100% yet. Last week, we felt like Jake [Retzlaff] gave us a better chance. This week, we'll kind of see what it looks like and let you know. I'm not in Kedon's body, but I can tell you that if he's at full strength and if he's ready to go, then he's our guy usually."
Kedon Slovis has started eight games for BYU this season. Slovis has thrown for 1,716 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. BYU is 5-3 this season when Slovis starts at quarterback.
