BYU to Start Jake Retzlaff at Quarterback Against Oklahoma State
After starting the first eight games of the season at quarterback, senior Kedon Slovis hasn't played for BYU since the Texas game. Junior Jake Retzlaff has started the last three games in Slovis' place while he recovers from injury. Kalani Sitake told Greg Wrubell that Retzlaff will make his fourth consecutive start against Oklahoma State. Kedon Slovis will be available as a backup.
With one regular season remaining, BYU needs one more win to reach bowl eligibility.
With Jake Retzlaff under center, BYU's run game has made great strides. Against Oklahoma, the Cougars dominated on the ground, running for 217 yards on 5.7 yards per carry. The passing game, however, has not been as productive under Retzlaff. Retzlaff is throwing for just 162 yards per game and turnovers have been a major problem. Retzlaff has thrown three interceptions and lost two fumbles in three games. Protecting the football will be critical for the Cougars against the Cowboys. If not for three turnovers against Oklahoma, BYU probably pulls off the upset against the Sooners.
With Kedon Slovis under center, BYU's rushing attack was non-existent. Without a running threat under center, opposing defenses didn't respect the quarterback in read option situations and BYU was consistently forced into third and long situations. Slovis, however, has been more productive through the air than Retzlaff. Slovis has thrown for 215 yards per game.
BYU and Oklahoma State kickoff at 1:30 PM MT on ABC.
