BYU Unveils the Uniform Combination for the Season Opener Against Sam Houston State
On Monday, BYU unveiled the uniform combination it will wear for the season opener against Sam Houston State. BYU will wear the royal home uniforms with royal helmets. It's also worth noting that the facemasks will be white.
Over the last three years, BYU has introduced more uniform variety than any other time in program history. The Cougars have added blue helmets, new blackout uniforms, painted helmets, and they even replaced the classic stretch βYβ with the Sailor Coug logo on the helmets for the New Mexico Bowl. In 2021, BYU wore 12 unique uniform combinations in 13 games. In 2022, BYU wore 13 different uniforms in 13 games. BYU has added so much variety, in fact, that they have toed the fine line between tradition and variety. BYUβs classic set of royal home and away uniforms are some of the best and most recognizable in college football. The downside to variety is it limits the opportunities to wear the most traditional and recognizable uniforms. Uniforms are an ingredient in brand identity, and brand identity and power is currently the most valuable asset in college athletics. Itβs unknown how BYU will balance uniform tradition and variety in 2023.
