BYU Won't Play a Spring Game in 2024
On Friday, BYU head coach Kalani Sitake confirmed that BYU won't hold a Spring game in 2024. "When they decided to make the change on the field, on the surface, [having no Spring game] was part of the sacrifice," Sitake said. "I think it will be worth it."
The playing surface was due to be replaced following the 2023 season. In the last two home games against Iowa State and Oklahoma, the grass became a storyline since it was noticeably torn up and slippery. The old grass at Lavell Edwards Stadium will be replaced with brand new grass for the 2024 season.
When Lavell Edwards Stadium was under construction before the 2019 season, BYU hosted a Spring game at the old Provo High School. Sitake told the media that wouldn't be an option this time around.
The news of no Spring game is a downer for those fans that wanted to get an early look at the 2024 BYU football team. BYU is one of the few programs that doesn't regularly host a Spring game.
Instead of hosting a Spring game for fans, BYU will host an alumni game on the West Campus Field, formerly the home of the Provo Bulldogs. The alumni game will be headlined by former BYU quarterbacks Riley Nelson, Jake Heaps, James Lark, Brandon Doman, and Max Hall. Hall played in the Spring game last year and he suffered an Achilles injury celebrating a touchdown.
