Colorado Transfer WR Chase Sowell Arrives for BYU Official Visit

Sowell was a prep star in Texas before he signed with Colorado

BYU continues to recruit the transfer portal to bolster its roster for next season. On Thursday, Colorado transfer wide receiver Chase Sowell arrived in Provo with his family for an official visit. Sowell was a prep star in Texas before he signed with the Buffaloes as part of their 2022 recruiting class. As a senior at Atascocita High School, Sowell racked up 70 catches for 1,380 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also added a punt return for a touchdown. After just one season in Boulder, Sowell entered the transfer portal. He was part of the mass exodus of Colorado scholarship players after Spring camp.

Sowell appeared in three games for Colorado as a true freshman, meaning he preserved his redshirt and has four years remaining. In three games played for the Buffaloes, Sowell caught two passes for 23 yards.

Since entering the transfer portal, Sowell has received competing offers from ECU, UConn, North Texas, and Texas State among a few other small schools. Last week, Sowell took an official visit to East Carolina. BYU has a compelling recruiting pitch. The Cougars would give Sowell the opportunity to remain at the Power Five level and play games in his home state of Texas.

Wide receiver is a position group that needs to add a few more bodies. After Spring camp, offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick said BYU was short as many as three or four scholarship wide receivers. Since then, BYU has added just one transfer wide receiver in Eastern Michigan transfer Darius Lassiter.

When asked if there was a need to add receivers from the transfer portal on the last day of Spring camp, Roderick said, "Yes, but I want to make sure everyone knows that it's not because we're not happy with who we have. Our numbers are down right now, we don't have as many receivers in the room. We actually have three, maybe four scholarships available there that we haven't used yet. I don't think we'll use all of them, but we'll probably use a couple of them to bolster that room with depth."

Behind Kody Epps, Keanu Hill, Darius Lassiter, and Chase Roberts, BYU is untested at wide receiver. Adding Sowell would provide valuable depth and give BYU a potential starter in the future.

Stay tuned for more transfer portal updates in the coming weeks.
