Four Things to Watch For When the 2024 BYU Football Schedule is Released
On Tuesday morning, the Big 12 will unveil the 2024 football schedule at 9 AM Mountain Time. The opponents are already known, but the dates have not been set. BYU will play home games against FCS Southern Illinois, Arizona, Houston, Oklahoma State, Kansas, and Kansas State. They will play road games at Utah, Arizona State, Baylor, UCF, Wyoming, and SMU.
Here are four things to watch for when the schedule is released.
When is the BYU-Utah game?
For the first time in over a decade, BYU and Utah will be playing in the same conference in 2024. Moving forward, the BYU-Utah game will be one of only four protected matchups every year, meaning it will be one of four matchups played annually. Back in the glory days of the rivalry, the BYU-Utah game was played on the last week of the season.
It's assumed that it will return to that weekend, but that hasn't been confirmed by the conference. From a BYU perspective, that will be the biggest storyline when the schedule is released.
A more manageable November?
BYU had a brutal November slate last season. The Cougars had to face Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Iowa State, and West Virginia. BYU needed just one win to go to a bowl game. Instead, BYU went 0-4 and finished the season 5-7.
BYU's November slate included four bowl teams and three teams that were competing for the Big 12 championship. A more manageable November would go a long ways in helping BYU get to a bowl game.
While BYU continues to build up its depth to Big 12 levels, winning in November is going to be a challenge year in and year out.
Bye weeks
Given the layout of the calendar next year, college football teams will have two bye weeks next season. Ideally, the bye weeks will be nicely spaced out on BYU's schedule.
Arizona State game
BYU fans are known for traveling well and there are thousands of BYU fans living in Arizona. Many BYU fans will have the Arizona State game circled on the schedule. If you're a BYU fan that plans to travel to the Arizona State game, you might want to make travel plans earlier rather than later.
