FPI Predicts BYU vs West Virginia, Updates Win Projection for the Cougars

The Cougars are underdogs against the Mountaineers

After a 35-6 loss to Texas, BYU hits the road again to take on the West Virginia Mountaineers. BYU is 5-3 and it goes to West Virginia as an eight-point underdog. The Mountaineers are 5-3 and coming off a win over UCF. ESPN's predictive college football algorithm, the football power index, updated its prediction for BYU-West Virginia. FPI gives BYU just a 28.8% chance to beat West Virginia on the road.

Before the loss to Texas, FPI projected BYU to finish with a 6.2-5.8 record and gave BYU a 75.1% chance to finish with six or more wins. After the loss, FPI downgraded BYU's projected record to 6.0-6.0 and now gives BYU a 69.8% chance to finish with six or more wins. BYU is on a mission for at least one more win to reach bowl eligibility in its first Big 12 season. FPI projects BYU to be the underdog in all four of its remaining games.

BYU started the 2023 season ranked 60th in FPI. BYU climbed to 53rd after a 4-1 start to the season. Now, BYU sits at 66th nationally after two losses in three games. 

Oklahoma is the the highest-ranked Big 12 team in the FPI rankings - the Sooners rank eighth nationally after a loss to Kansas. The Sooners travel to Provo to take on BYU in November.

In the FPI model, Oklahoma is given 45.1% chance to win the conference and Texas is second at 34.4%. Kansas State is third in line with a 16.3% chance to win the Big 12.
