It's a Two-Man Race for BYU's Starting Quarterback

The quarterback derby is already down to two primary contenders

On Thursday, BYU kicked off Spring camp with a practice outside the Student Athlete Building. BYU head coach Kalani Sitake was impressed by the readiness of the offense on day one.

"The key is for our offense to be executing at a high level. Today was a really good start. Normally, the offense isn't clicking like they were [on day one]. That's a huge compliment to the guys that are coming back. There's a lot of leadership coming back."

All eyes are on the quarterbacks since the starting job is wide open. 10, yes 10, quarterbacks were listed on BYU's roster. Following the practice, BYU head coach Kalani Sitake announced that the competition for BYU's starting quarterback job is a two-man race between Jake Retzlaff and Gerry Bohanon.

"Gary's been through that before. He's won at a high level," Sitake said when asked why the competition is down to just two. "Jake had some experience last year, but he's also played a ton of football in his time at the JC level. I think right now we're going with those two guys."

When asked why it's down to those two, Sitake said, "Today was a good indication of that. Tons of talent. Those guys understand the scheme a lot more. They're in a good position right now to make plays. I thought they made a lot of big-time plays today. They made some really excellent throws, some great decisions and took care of the football."

BYU continues Spring camp on Friday with a closed practice. Beginning next week, they will practice three times each week throughout the month of March.
