Kalani Sitake Says Kedon Slovis is 'Our Guy' at Quarterback When Healthy

Slovis has missed the last two games due to injury

On Monday, BYU head coach Kalani Sitake met with the media. BYU, who is coming off a 41-13 blowout loss to Iowa State, has started junior Jake Retzlaff at quarterback for the last two games while Kedon Slovis has nursed an injury. Sitake was asked about Slovis' status for Saturday's game against Oklahoma.

"He practiced last week," Sitake said. "He's still banged up, not 100% yet. Last week, we felt like Jake [Retzlaff] gave us a better chance. This week, we'll kind of see what it looks like and let you know. I'm not in Kedon's body, but I can tell you that if he's at full strength and if he's ready to go, then he's our guy usually."

Retzlaff, who was the lone bright spot in the loss to West Virginia, struggled mightily against Iowa State. Retzlaff was 10/27 for 104 yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions. His mobility was a benefit to the BYU offense, but he struggled to see the field and he missed some key throws.

Kedon Slovis has started eight games for BYU this season. Slovis has thrown for 1,716 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. BYU is 5-3 this season when Slovis starts at quarterback.

The Last Time BYU Played Oklahoma

It's been nearly 15 years since the Cougars last played the Sooners. BYU played Oklahoma in the 2009 season opener - it was the first game played in the new stadium of the Dallas Cowboys. The Sooners were ranked no. 3 in the country and returned reigning Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford. Bradford left the game with a broken collarbone and BYU scored a late touchdown to pull out the 14-13 victory.

BYU and Oklahoma also played in each other in a bowl game in 1994. BYU dominated the Sooners 31-6 in that game.
