Kedon Slovis Says Touchdown to Chase Roberts was 'Not Supposed to Work Out That Way'

Slovis admitted that the long touchdown throw to Chase Roberts

With five minutes left in the third quarter, the BYU offense got the ball back with a 21-13 lead. A holding penalty put BYU in 2nd & 21 from the BYU 41 yard-line. BYU quarterback Kedon Slovis side-stepped a Cincinnati defender in the pocket and delivered a deep pass that was caught by Chase Roberts. Roberts outran the Cincinnati defense and scored the 59-yard touchdown.

When the ball left Slovis' hand, it appeared to be intended for Keanu Hill who was crossing the field. The ball sailed over Hill's head and into the hands of Roberts who ran it in for the score. After the game, BYU quarterback Kedon Slovis admitted that play was "not supposed to work out that way."

After the game, Slovis was asked about that play. "Everything is for a reason," Slovis joked. "I would say I got really lucky and Chase made a heck of a play...it was not supposed to work out that way but it did and shout-out to Chase for making it work."

Although Slovis' comments essentially confirm the pass was intended for Hill, Roberts made a conscious decision to come back to the football once he saw Slovis under pressure. "I was supposed to run a go but I saw him scramble and kind of get hit, so I just came back to the ball," Roberts told the media after the game. "That was drawn up perfect," Roberts joked. "I'm going to say yeah we drew it up, that's what we do."

That heads-up play completely flipped the momentum in BYU's favor. Had Roberts not stepped in front of that pass, a Cincinnati defender was waiting to intercept it. Instead, Roberts gave BYU a two-score lead and the Cougars never looked back.

It has been those opportunistic plays that have led BYU to a 4-1 start to the season. It hasn't always been pretty and it certainly hasn't always been flashy, but it's been effective. In this new era of Power Five football, stats and style points don't matter. A win is a win and BYU left with a win on Friday night.

Roberts was BYU's best player on offense against the Bearcats. He finished with 131 receiving yards on 6 receptions. Roberts had a reception of at least 20 yards on three of BYU's four touchdown drives.
