Statistical Leaders from BYU's Spring Scrimmage

A look at the statistical leaders from BYU's open scrimmage on Friday

On Friday, BYU ran an open scrimmage at Lavell Edwards Stadium. The game consisted of 65 plays split amongst nearly all the players on the roster. In total, six different quarterbacks took snaps on Friday. There isn't too much to glean from a scrimmage, especially when so many players are rotating in and out. Regardless, here are the statistical leaders from BYU's Spring game.

No quarterback attempted more than 13 passes on Friday, and BYU admittedly kept things very simple on both sides of the ball, so these statistics should be taken with a grain of salt. Regardless of the circumstances, it was Jake Retzlaff that had the best statistical outing among the quarterbacks.

Retzlaff led all quarterbacks in passing yards with 69 yards. Ryder Burton was right behind Retzlaff with 67 passing yards. Slovis threw for 50 yards on Friday. Retzlaff was also the only quarterback to throw for a touchdown.

Retlzaff led all quarterbacks in completion percentage, completing 7 out of 10 passes (70%). Ryder Burton completed 5/8 attempts (63%), and Slovis completed 6/13 attempts (46%).

Receiving Yards

Freshman wide receiver Devin Downing led all receivers with 41 receiving yards on 2 receptions. Chase Roberts, who prepped with Downing at American Fork High School, was second behind Downing with 35 receiving yards on 2 receptions.

Freshman running back Nukuluve Helu led all rushers with 56 rushing yards on just 6 attempts. Helu was a priority recruit for BYU back in the 2020 class - he flashed the skillset that made him a coveted recruit coming out of high school. Helu is part of a loaded running back room that is set to get even better when four-star running back LJ Martin joins the program. If Helu's performance as the third or fourth-string running back was any indication, BYU's running back room is in a great spot for the 2023 season.

Defensive Categories

George Udo led all tacklers with four tackles on Friday. Interior defensive lineman Atunaisa Mahe was credited with the lone sack, although there were a few more plays that might have been sacks in a live setting.

Jakob Robinson led all defenders with one interception in the 11-on-11 portion. Robinson stepped in front of an out route from Kedon Slovis for the interception. Robinson recorded another interception in the 7-v-7 portion. Robinson will be a fixture in the BYU secondary this season.
