There's a Logjam in the Middle of the Big 12 Standings
As of Saturday morning, all 14 teams in the Big 12 have played two games. It's still early in the conference season, but there's already a logjam in the middle of the Big 12 conference standings. Of the 14 teams in the Big 12, 8 of them have a 1-1 record in conference play. BYU is one of those eight teams.
After Texas and Oklahoma play on Saturday, only two undefeated teams will remain. According to FPI, Oklahoma and Texas are the runaway favorites to win the conference this season. FPI gives Oklahoma a 54% chance to win the conference and it gives Texas a 42% chance to win the Big 12. No other team in the Big 12 has better than a 2% chance to win the conference.
FPI expects the logjam in the Big 12 standings to remain throughout the rest of the season. FPI projects nine teams to win 3-4 games in conference play (rounded): TCU, Texas Tech, Cincinnati, UCF, Iowa State, Kansas, Baylor, Oklahoma State and BYU.
What does this mean for the Cougars after their 4-1 start? Given the projected logjam in the middle of the standings, the difference between 4th place and 11th place in the conference standings could be one or two wins. Even though BYU is a newcomer in this league, they have a great opportunity to finish in the top 4-6 teams in the standings.
On one hand, BYU has the disadvantage of playing both Texas and Oklahoma. On the other hand, BYU is one team in the conference that controls its destiny.
BYU will return to action next weekend on the road at TCU. The Horned Frogs are in action today against Iowa State.
