Top Performers from BYU's Win Over Texas Tech
On Saturday evening, BYU took down Texas Tech 27-14 thanks to five forced turnovers. Here are the top performers from BYU's win over the Red Raiders.
Crew Wakley
Crew Wakley had a rough outing against TCU - he was flagged for a bad unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that changed the game. Wakley rebounded in a major way against Texas Tech. Wakley had 11 total tackles and he was very disruptive in the passing game. Wakley tipped the pass at the line of scrimmage that was intercepted by Eddie Heckard. He also dropped another interception that could have gone for a touchdown. Wakley has cemented himself as the starter at safety moving forward.
Offensive Line
BYU's deficiencies in the running game this season have been well documented. Against Texas Tech, BYU had success running the football throughout the game behind the BYU offensive line. The offense finished with a season high 150 rushing yards while averaging a healthy five yards per carry.
Eddie Heckard
Eddie Heckard was in the right place at the right time multiple times against Texas Tech. Heckard recovered a fumble for a touchdown in the first half. He also had an interception for the second consecutive week. He finished with four tackles, one interception, one PBU, and a fumble recovery.
LJ Martin
On BYU's first drive, LJ Martin found a seam in the defense and ran for 55 yards to put BYU in Texas Tech territory. Martin was effective throughout the game, running for 90 yards on only 10 carries. His 9.0 per-carry average is a career high.
Jakob Robinson
Jakob Robinson was targeted throughout the game in the screen game. Robinson responded time and time again, making tackles in space. Robinson finished with 10 tackles and he also had an interception at the end of the first half.
Tyler Batty
Tyler Batty made two of the biggest hits of the game on special teams. One of them forced a fumble and put BYU in scoring position. Batty finished with 9 total tackles, a quarterback hit, and the aforementioned forced fumble.
Darius Lassiter
Darius Lassiter made what might be the catch of the year. In the first half, Kedon Slovis found Lassiter near the sideline. Lassiter jumped and caught the ball with just one hand while staying in bounds. A few plays later, Slovis found Lassiter in the end zone for the score.
Siale Esera
True freshman Siale Esera is starting to get more reps for the BYU defense. Esera stands out whenever he is on the field. There's a reason why he was a coveted recruited coming out of Timpview High School. Esera finished with only three total tackles but his impact was felt beyond the box score.
