Weather Could Play a Role in BYU's Game at Kansas

Inclement weather is in the forecast on Saturday

On Saturday, BYU travels to Lawrence, Kansas to take on the Kansas Jayhawks. Both teams are coming into conference play with unblemished non-conference records. Most notably, this is BYU's first conference game as a member of the Big 12 and the first conference game since 2010 when BYU was a member of the Mountain West Conference.

According to the National Weather Service of Kansas City, weather could play a role in the game on Saturday. The NWS reports that severe thunderstorms are possible in the late afternoon and evening in Kansas. The game kicks off at 2:30 local time and is scheduled to go until 5:30. The severe weather warnings in the area begin at 5PM local time. According to this forecast, the worst of the severe weather wouldn't arrive until the second half of the game.  The National Weather Service anticipates heavy rainfall, wind gusts of up to 60 MPH, and the potential for damaging hail.

If the game is delayed by lightning, it could be a challenge to finish the game. Once the severe weather starts, the thunderstorms are expected to last several hours. In the best-case scenario, the game would conclude just before the severe storms arrive.

The Weather Channel has a more optimistic outlook of the weather forecast in Lawrence. The Weather Channel forecasts the wind to be 10-15 MPH during the game with a chance of precipitation at 45%-55% in the second half.

BYU has relied on the passing game to move the football through three games. If wind becomes a factor in this game, the Cougars will have to rely on the rushing attack. Through three games, BYU is averaging just 78.3 rushing yards per game. On defense, BYU has been stout against the run. The Cougars are allowing 99.7 rushing yards per game.
