Five BYU Quarterback Recruits to Know

Signing a quarterback is a top priority in the 2024 class

It's no surprise that Pitt transfer Kedon Slovis won the starting quarterback job during BYU's Spring camp. Slovis, who has just one year of eligibility remaining, was recruited to Provo with the expectation that he would lead BYU's offense in 2023. After 2023, BYU's starting quarterback spot will be up for grabs. Quarterbacks that are currently on the roster like Jake Retzlaff, Ryder Burton, and Cade Fennegan will compete for that spot when the time comes. It's also extremely likely that BYU will bring in another quarterback or two for the 2024 season.

Even if BYU dips into the transfer portal for a quarterback in 2024, signing a high school quarterback is a priority for BYU's 2024 class. Last week, long-time BYU target Isaac Wilson shut down his recruitment and committed to Utah. Today, we will focus our attention on five other quarterbacks that BYU is recruiting in the 2024 class.

Maealuiaki Smith - California

Maealuiaki Smith is a native of Northern California with offers from across the country. Smith, who is listed at 6'4, recently told 247Sports that he plans to take an official visit to BYU in June. Smith also plans to take official visits to Michigan State and Oklahoma State. Smith has the kind of talent that would allow him to compete for the starting job as soon as he arrives on campus - his ceiling is as high as any quarterback that BYU has recruited in the 2024 class.

Enoch Watson - Arizona

Earlier this month, BYU extended a scholarship offer to 2024 Arizona quarterback prospect Enoch Watson. Watson is the younger brother of 2023 signee Pierson Watson. Enoch has been in touch with BYU and offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick dating back multiple years. BYU was the first school to offer Watson a scholarship. Other schools like Weber State, SUU, and North Dakota have been recruiting Enoch. On the same day he received the offer from BYU, he was throwing for the coaching staff at Oregon State.

Enoch has the physical tools and potential to see his recruiting profile grow over the next few months. He has great size at 6'3 and he flashes his athleticism from the quarterback position. He is also accurate - he recently won the accuracy challenge at an Under Armour showcase. He was also named co-MVP.

Carson Su'esu'e - Utah

BYU extended an offer to 2024 Granger High School quarterback Carson Su'esu'e last week. Su'esu'e holds competing offers from Tennessee, Pitt, Utah, Arizona, Utah State, UNLV, and Hawaii among others. Su'esu'e is familiar with BYU. He took an unofficial visit to BYU during the Spring.

Carson, who is listed at 6'5, played the first three years of his high school career in California at De La Salle High School. De La Salle runs a run-heavy offense with triple options principles. When Su'esu'e had the chance to throw, he was often designed to be on the run or outside the pocket. Su'esu'e will have the opportunity to play in a new offense this Fall. He moved to West Valley where he will play his final year at Granger High School.

Su'esu'e has ideal size and he has a strong arm with a quick release. He can squeeze throws into tight windows that can make plays with his legs. Physically speaking, he has a very high ceiling as a Power Five quarterback.

Dermaricus Davis - California

California native Dermaricus Davis received a BYU offer earlier this month. He holds competing offers from Arizona, Washington, Oregon State, Minnesota, Washington State, and San Diego State among others. Like the others on this list, Davis is tall at 6'4. He told 247Sports that BYU was pushing for an official visit this weekend. He has two official visits to Arizona and Washington scheduled for this month.

Lance Reynolds - Utah

Legacy recruit Lance Reynolds is listed as an athlete. He plays quarterback for Orem High School where his Dad (a former BYU standout) is the head coach. Reynolds eclipsed 3,000 passing yards as a junior last season.
