Five BYU Recruits that Could Be the Next to Commit
The calendar has turned from June to July. Historically speaking, June has been one of the busiest, and most important, months for BYU on the recruiting trail. This past June was no different. Four prospects verbally committed to the Cougars, and BYU hosted some of its top 2024 targets on campus. Today, we'll look into the future at five recruits that could be the next commit to BYU.
1. Maealiuaki Smith - QB
California native and three-star quarterback Maealiuaki Smith took an official visit to BYU a few weeks ago. Smith has also taken an official visit to Oklahoma State. It's been a few weeks since Smith has made public comments, but he previously stated his plans to make a decision this month.
During his recruitment, Smith has received 20 offers including offers from Florida State, Washington, Utah, Miami, Cincinnati, Arizona State, Colorado, Michigan State, Oklahoma State, and Arizona among others. Smith made a trip to Provo for an unofficial visit in April, and BYU made a big enough impression to earn a return trip in June.
The Cougars have a compelling recruiting pitch for high school quarterbacks - the last two starting quarterbacks under Aaron Roderick have been drafted in the NFL. BYU's coaching staff has made Smith a top priority and they are hoping their efforts pay off with a commitment.
2. Carson Su'esu'e - ATH
Granger High School's Carson Su'esu'e is listed as a quarterback by recruiting services. BYU is recruiting him as an athlete. Su'esu'e was on an official visit in Provo a few weeks ago, one week after taking an official visit to Utah State.
He has received offers from the likes of Utah, Tennessee, Pitt, Arizona State, and FAU among others.
Su'esu'e has not publicly announced his decision timeline, but if he plans to make a Summer decision, it appears to be a two-way race between BYU and Utah State.
3. Kash Dillon - DL
Local standout Kash Dillon told Cougs Daily that he wants to announce his college decision by mid-July "or sooner". This is a two-way race between BYU and Utah. Dillon held competing offers from various Power Five programs like Washington, Arizona State, Washington State, Arizona, Oregon State, and Vanderbilt among others. Regardless of his multiple opportunities out of state, he has decided to play his college ball in the state of Utah.
BYU has done very well to be among the finalists in Dillon's recruitment. Dillon wasn't interested in playing for BYU's previous defensive staff, primarily because of the scheme. Now, BYU is pitching him the opportunity to get after the quarterback in an aggressive scheme with four down lineman. BYU defensive ends coach Kelly Poppinga has grown especially close with Dillon during his recruitment. Thanks to the efforts of Poppinga and the rest of BYU's defensive staff, BYU is a legitimate threat to land a commitment.
4. Davis Andrews - DB
Another top in-state target, American Fork's Davis Andrews has been a top priority for the new defensive staff since they arrived in Provo. BYU's coaching staff has even gone as far as describing him as irreplaceable on their recruiting board because of his unique versatility. Andrews has taken official visits to Utah, UCLA, Notre Dame, and most recently BYU. This one appears to be a three-way race between BYU, Notre Dame, and Utah.
Andrews is in no rush to make a college decision, but now that his official visits are over, he could announce any time.
5. Faletau Satuala - DB
Bountiful High School standout Faletau Satuala is one of the highest-rated recruits in the state of Utah. Satuala just took an official visit to BYU after taking official visits to Utah and UCLA.
Satuala is a fluid athlete with the potential to be a dynamic, ball-hawking safety at the next level. Like the others on this list, Satuala aims to make a Summer decision. The Cougars had the opportunity to make the final impression on his last official visit.
