Kalolo Ta’aga Talks New BYU Offer

Ta'aga is an offensive tackle prospect from California

BYU is 4-1 and in the middle of the race for a Big 12 championship. This weekend, BYU has a bye before they travel to Texas to take on TCU next weekend. While the coaches have a few days of break from game prep, they have turned some more attention to the recruiting trail. On Friday, BYU extended an offer to California native and offensive tackle prospect Kalolo Ta'aga. We caught up with Ta'aga to discuss his most recent offer from BYU.

Ta'aga is brand new to the game of football. Ta'aga played basketball for Archbishop Riordan High School before he decided to take his talents to the gridiron. "I started playing football 3-4 months ago," Ta'aga said. "It was a lot transitioning to playing DE then going to TE then moving to tackle...but I definitely had lots of fun in the journey to getting where I am now. I feel that basketball helped a lot especially with my footwork."

Ta'aga, who is listed at 6'7 and 265 pounds, has ideal size for an offensive tackle. Once he gets into a collegiate lifting program, his frame will look like a starting Power Five tackle.

It is his natural potential that has attracted so many schools during his recruitment. Ta'aga holds competing offers from the likes of Florida, Utah, Arizona State, Arizona, Cal, Fresno State, and Utah State among others. Back in July, Ta'aga committed to nearby San Jose State. After his commitment, more and more schools entered the picture. He decided to back off his verbal commitment to San Jose State and open up his recruitment at the end of September.

BYU offensive line coach Darrell Funk has been Ta'aga's primary contact on the BYU staff. "I first got in touch with Coach Funk when he came down to watch us work out...since then we’ve been in touch and building a relationship."

It was Coach Funk that offered Kalolo (goes by Lolo) the scholarship to BYU. "It was a moment of excitement because BYU is a school in Utah and my family in Utah are diehard BYU fans so I’m sure they will be happy," he said.

Due to the unique nature and timing of his recruitment, Ta'aga hasn't outlined visit plans. Because we're in the middle of the high school football season, he only has so many weekends available before signing day.

On film, Ta'aga's basketball background stands out - he moves laterally very well and that makes him great in pass protection. Between his quick feet, his length, and his physical nature, it's easy to see why so many schools are competing for his signature.

BYU would do very well to land Lolo and continue to build upon the success they've had along the offensive line. He is the type of player that could start for multiple years once he gets more accustomed to the details of offensive play.
