Three-Star Quarterback Noah Lugo Talks BYU Visit

Noah Lugo made his first trip to Provo last weekend

Last weekend, BYU hosted a handful of recruits on campus for unofficial visits. The recruits participated in a barbecue, a photoshoot, and meetings with position coaches. One of the recruits in attendance was three-star Texas quarterback Noah Lugo. Lugo, who is currently committed to UTSA, received an offer from BYU last month. This was Lugo's first time on BYU's campus. We caught up with Noah to get an update on his BYU visit.

"It was really good," Lugo said when asked about his first trip to Provo. "I really enjoyed the scenic view of the mountains and all that as well. I mean, there's a lot of stuff to do in Provo that I enjoy. So it was really nice to have a barbecue, sit with all the coaches. Get to eat, get to talk, get to talk other stuff than football, but we did talk football at the end of the day."

Going into the visit, Lugo wanted to check out the academic opportunities at BYU. He is hoping to study civil engineering and construction management, degrees that are offered at BYU. After the barbecue, Lugo took a tour of campus and met with an academic advisor. He also got to visit Lavell Edwards stadium and BYU's practice facilities.

His visit concluded with a meeting with offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick. That meeting stood out as his favorite part of the visit. "We just kept going back and forth about plays and stuff like that," Noah said. "It lasted for about three hours."

BYU's consistent ability to create chunk plays stood out to during the film review. "They certainly use the quarterback to run the ball a decent amount, but at the same time, they won't be afraid to take the top off," Lugo said. "They have big plays pretty much two to three times a quarter...obviously you want to be in an offense where you put points on the board, and then being one of the highest-powered offenses in the country is definitely a plus."

On what made his visit to BYU unique, Lugo said, "They just made it feel like it would be comfortable to go there...it wouldn't be something where you're freaking out because you're changing from high school to college. From the players that I talked, they made it seem like the transition is so easy and it's like a family environment."

Lugo preps at Eaton High School in Haslet, Texas. As a junior last season, Lugo racked up 30 total touchdowns and nearly 2,700 yards of total offense. Listed at 6'2, Lugo is a true dual-threat quarterback. He has a strong arm that can make throws at all levels of the field, and he has the running ability to punish defenses for long runs. Lugo tells Cougs Daily that BYU likes his ability to stress the defense with both his arm and legs.

BYU has had success with dual-threat quarterbacks under Aaron Roderick, meaning Lugo wouldn't have to rewrite the script of successful quarterback play in Roderick's offense. Instead, he could follow the path that's been laid out before him. Most recently, dual-threat quarterback Jaren Hall totaled nearly 7,000 yards of total offense and 61 total touchdowns including 800 yards on the ground. Hall was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2023 NFL Draft.
