On Wednesday, BYU picked up a signing day commitment from Timpview defensive lineman Motekiai Mounga. Mounga, who took an official visit to BYU in December, picked the Cougars over competing offers from Utah State, UNLV, SUU, and New Mexico State. Mounga's commitment comes as a surprise to some who have followed his recruitment. Last week, Mounga released a list of final four schools that excluded BYU. His final four included Utah State, SUU, UNLV, and Hawaii. Just days later, Mounga scrapped his top four and committed to BYU.

Mounga is a mid three-star recruit according to 247Sports. If you watched Timpview play this season, Mounga's size and athleticism at defensive tackle stood out. Mounga is listed at 6'3, 250 pounds and he plays with a violence and physicality that is fun to watch. His frame is massive and he has plenty of room to add weight. BYU needs to add talent along the defensive line, and Mounga gives that unit a boost as it heads into the Big 12. You can check out his senior highlights below.

Timpview High School has always been an important recruiting pipeline for BYU. That's been especially true this season as BYU has three Timpview player committed in this class: Motekiai Mounga, Siale Esera, and Pokaiaua Haunga. BYU's coaching staff is going to continue to prioritize Timpview High School in the the class of 2024 and beyond.
