Cal's Devin Askew Enters Transfer Portal
Guard Devin Askew, who was a starter for Cal at the beginning of the 2023-24 basketball season but missed most of the season with an injury, plans to enter the transfer portal, according to multiple media outlets.
Askew began his college career at Kentucky, then spent a year at Texas before transferring to Cal prior to the 2022-23 season.
However, his two years at Cal were nearly ruined by injuries. Askew was Cal's leading scorer in 2022-23 when he averaged 15.5 points on 37.8% shooting from the floor. However, he played just 13 games -- all of which were starts -- before undergoing season-ending sports-hernia surgery.
He was a starter in the Bears' 2023-24 opener, operating as Cal's point guard, and started the first three games. But he played in just six games, including three starts, while averaging 6.2 points, before missing the rest of the season with a foot injury. It was announced on January 9 that he would be sidelined for the remainder of the season.
Askew had started 20 games as a freshman at Kentucky, then started three games the next season at Texas, where he averaged 2.1 points.
Askew might have been a starter next season for Cal, which will lose at least three starters, and possibly four if Jaylon Tyson opts to turn pro this year with one season of college eligibility remaining.
However, coach Mark Madsen is expected to add transfers to fill the Cal roster for next season, which will be Cal's first basketball season in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
It's unclear how Askew might have fit into Madsen's plans for 2023-24.
