Jarred Hyder, who sat out the 2022-23 season at Cal because of an injury, has joined the Cal Poly basketball team, the school announced this week.

Hyder transferred to Cal in 2020 after spending his freshman season at Fresno State. He played in 21 games, including four starts, in 2020-21 and averaged 5.4 points, and he played in 22 games, including two starts, in 2021-22, when he averaged 2.3 points. He missed the entire 2022-23 season with a back injury that required surgery in December.

Hyder leaves a Cal team that went 3-29 overall this past season, leading to the dismissal of coach Mark Fox and the hiring of Mark Madsen.  Hyder joins a Cal Poly team that went 8-24, including 1-18 in the Big West Conference.

"Jarred brings much needed experience, maturity and leadership to the point guard position for us," Cal Poly head coach John Smith said in a statement. "He's a very cerebral player that competes with great pace and unselfishness – the epitome of what you want in a point guard.

"His high character and professional approach to the game is something that's innate. He was our main target once he hit the transfer portal and we're very fortunate to find someone that fits the academic and athletic profile at Cal Poly. Jarred's impact will be immediate for our Mustangs."
