Cal Basketball Adds Texas Tech Transfer Jaylon Tyson
Cal added a second basketball transfer from Texas Tech as wing Jaylon Tyson announced on social media on Monday that he has committed to the Golden Bears.
Tyson was a teammate of Fardaws Aimaq at Texas Tech last year, and Aimaq was the first player to transfer to Cal after Mark Madsen was hired as the Bears basketball coach.
The 6-foot-7 Tyson started all 31 games in which he played this past season as a sophomore at Texas Tech, and he averaged 10.7 points and 6.1 rebounds while shooting 40.2% on three-point shots.Β He averagedΒ 11.7 points and 7.1 rebounds per game in Big 12 Conference games.Β He had a season-high 27 points against West Virginia, and scored 18 points or more six times.
He is from Plano, Texas, and visited a number of schools after entering the transfer portal. In addition to Cal, Tyson visited Kansas,Β Arkansas, Alabama, Auburn, Louisville, and Creighton.
Tyson joined the Texas Tech program in December 2021 after transferring from Texas. He played in eight games (no starts) for the Longhorns in 2021-22 before departing and averaged 1.8 points and 1.1 rebounds.
Coming out of John Paul II High School, Tyson wasΒ ranked as the No. 34 prospect in the nation by Rivals, No. 35 by 247 Sports Composite and No. 42 by ESPN.
Tyson is the fifth transfer Madsen has brought to Cal since being named head coach.
