Ex-Cal Walk-On Nick Kerr Named Head Coach of Warriors' G-League Team
Nick Kerr, the son of Warriors coach Steve Kerr and a one-time walk-on player at Cal, reportedly has been promoted to head coach of the Santa Cruz Warriors of the G-League.
Kerr, now 30, played one season of basketball at Cal as a graduate student during the 2015-16 season. He appeared in seven games, scoring nine points on 3-for-6 accuracy from the 3-point arc.Cal was 23-11 under coach Cuonzo Martin that season, losing 77-66 to Hawaii in the opening round of the NCAA tournament, the Bears’ most recent appearance in the event.
Kerr’s teammates on that squad included Jaylen Brown, Tyrone Wallace, Ivan Rabb, Jordan Mathews and Jabari Bird.
His sister Maddy played volleyball for the Bears, with the family settling into the Bay Area after Steve Kerr became established as Warriors coach.
Kerr previously played three seasons at San Diego, where he totaled 54 points in 40 games. He shot 40 percent from the 3-point arc for his career, hardly surprising considering his dad, Steve, is the all-time NBA career leader ar 45.4 percent.
Nick Kerr got his first opportunity to work in the NBA in 2017-18 in the video room of the San Antonio Spurs, whose coach Greg Popovich is close to Steve Kerr.
He then spent three seasons doing the same work for the Warriors and has been an assistant coach with the Santa Cruz team the past two seasons.
