No. 92: Kristine Anigwe
Cal Sports Connection: Four-year starter for Cal’s women’s basketball team, leading the team in scoring every year.
Claim to Fame: She was a second-team All-America selection in 2019, holds multiple Cal records and created her own line of women’s clothing
.
You can debate whether Colleen Galloway or Milica Vukadinovic or Brittany Boyd or Kristine Anigwe was the best women’s basketball player in Cal history, but Anigwe earns a spot on The Cal 100 based on her remarkable statistics and her creation of a line of women’s clothing while still competing professionally.
The 6-foot-4 Anigwe became a star as soon as she stepped on the Cal campus. She led the team in scoring each of her four seasons, and leaves behind a laundry list of achievements.
THE HONORS:
---Anigwe was named all-Pac-12 all four years.
---She was a second-team Associated Press All-American in 2019.
---Anigwe was named national defensive player of the year in 2019.
---She was a first-round WNBA draft pick in 2019.
THE RECORD BOOK:
---Anigwe holds the Cal record for career scoring, men or women, with 2,591 points.
---She ranks fourth in women’s Pac-12 history in career scoring.
---Anigwe ranks third in conference history in career rebounds, with 1,404 boards.
---She holds the Pac-12 single-season record for rebounds, with 533 in 2019.
---Anigwe led the nation in rebounds per game in 2019, averaging 16.1.
THE SINGLE-GAME SHOW-STOPPERS:
---As a sophomore in 2017, she scored 50 points in a game against Sacramento State. It’s the most by any Cal player, man or women, in history, breaking the mark of 48 points achieved by Ed Gray in 1997. It also tied the Pac-12 women’s record for points in a game.
---In a March 3, 2019, game at Washington State, Anigwe recorded 32 points and 30 rebounds, the first 30-30 game in a Division I women’s game since December 2002.
And, oh yeah, she can dunk, if that matters.
As of this writing, Anigwe was playing for the Turkish team Cukurova Basketbol of the Women’s Basketball Super League.
She has been less productive in her four seasons in the WNBA, starting just three games, including one in 2022 while with Phoenix. She has never averaged more than 4.6 points in a season, and her 2023 WNBA status is unclear.
However, it was during her time in the WNBA that she developed KA Originals, a clothing line for women. It is a clothing brand dedicated to body positivity and equality.
