Cal Posts 2023 Football Roster -- a Few Changes

Jaydn Ott has a new number. Two wide receivers not on 2023 roster. A lot of newcomers

Cal recently posted its football roster for the fall of 2023, and it features 118 names and a few notable changes.

---Absent from the roster were wide receivers Tommy Christakos and Justin Richard Baker, a pair of scholarship players who played in games the past two seasons. Christakos played in 10 games last season and had four catches for 43 yards. He played in six games in 2021, but did not have any receptions. Baker played in six games last year and made one catch, which went for 55 yards and touchdown. He played in seven games as a freshman, when he had seven receptions for 44 yards.

---Twenty-two players on the roster are incoming freshmen, but only 10 of them were players Cal announced as signees. The other 12 presumably are walk-ons, including two quarterbacks – Belay Brummel and Brady Weingart.

---One of the freshmen is offensive lineman Nick Morrow, who was a member of Cal’s 2022 signing class, but who greyshirted and did not enroll until January 2023.

---The roster includes 22 players who transferred from four-year colleges to Cal this past offseason. That includes quarterback Ben Finley, a transfer from North Carolina State who started two games during his three seasons with the Wolfpack and will compete for the starting job with Sam Jackson V, a redshirt freshman transfer from TCU who is the front-runner for the starting job.

---Four players who attended junior college last year are on Cal’s 2023 fall roster.

---Jaedon Roberts, who spent his first three seasons at Cal as a defensive lineman and made two starts at that position, has been moved to the offensive line, but missed spring ball with an injury.

---A slew of players changed their jersey number, including sophomore running back Jaydn Ott, who will wear No. 1 after being No. 6 as a freshman, and sophomore defensive back Jeremy Earby, who is taking over Ott’s No. 6 after being No. 29 last season as a freshman.

Cal’s training camp begins next week, and the season opens with a road game against North Texas on September 2, followed by the home opener against Auburn on September 9.
