Cal apparently has pulled off a significant move through the transfer portal as Washington wide receiver Taj Davis has committed to transferring to Cal. Davis announced his choice of Cal on his Instagram account.

Davis entered the transfer portal on April 28, and Cal has been looking for a big-time wide receiver since J.Michael Sturdivant entered the transfer portal and committed to UCLA a few months ago.

But the Bears apparently will upgrade its receiving corps with Davis, who had 21 receptions for 277 yards and three touchdowns for the Huskies as a sophomore in 2022. He had three catches for 20 yards in the Huskies' win over Cal last season. A more significant performance came against Oregon when Davis had a 62-yard touchdown reception with 3:07 remaining to tie the game before the Huskies went on to win.

Davis had Washington quarterback Michael Penix feeding him passes this past season, and Penis wound up eighth in the Heisman Trophy voting in 2022.

In 2021, Davis started six of the 11 games in which he played and had 26 catches for 329 yards and one TD. He had two catches for 26 yards and a score in the Huskies' victory over Cal that year.

The 6-foot-2, 193-pound Davis opted out of the 2020 season because he had myocarditis, and he sat out the 2019 season as a redshirt.

Davis was considered a three-star prospect coming out of from Upland, Calif., and he had offers from UCLA, Utah, Indiana, Stanford, Washington State as well as Cal coming out of Upland High School.

Cal already has one elite receiver in Jeremiah Hunter, and Mavin Anderson and Monroe Young occupied the other two starting positions during the spring.  Illinois transfer Brian Hightower figures to get considerable playing time at wide receiver but he missed most of spring ball with an injury. Mason Starling missed all of spring practice with an injury and he has been plagued by health issues ever since he arrived at Cal from junior college prior to the 2022 season.

Cal also recently added Mississippi State wide receiver transfer Marquez Dortch, who figures to get playing time.
