Cal Football Video: Bears to Stay Busy During Bye Week

Some players will focus on getting healthy, others will get extra reps to assist with development

The Cal players who have seen the most snaps, on both sides of the ball, will use this bye week to take a deep breath and let their bodies heal after six games. Their week will be primarily devoted to conditioning and rehab.

Those include linebackers Evan Weaver and Kuony Deng, most of the Bears' veteran secondary and offensive tackle Jake Curhan, the only member of the team's originally projected O-line who is not currently injured.

Other players, especially those still learning the game, will get extra reps as the coaching staff targets their development. Quarterback Devon Modster, newly installed as the starter last week, certainly will be kept busy.

The wounded, obviously, will focus strictly on getting healthy. But coach Justin Wilcox said he hopes offensive linemen Michael Saffell and Valentino Daltoso, who were injured during Saturday's 17-7 loss at Oregon, will be ready to go by the time the Bears host Oregon State a week from Saturday.

He was also optimistic that running back Marcel Dancy, wide receiver Kekoa Crawford and tight end Gavin Reinwald, all of whom missed the Oregon game with injuries, will be up and running against in time for the Beavers.
