Former Cal safety Daniel Scott has accepted an invitation to the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine, which is scheduled to take place February 27 through March 6 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Being invited to the Combine means NFL teams are interested in Scott as a potential NFL player, although it does not guarantee that Scott will be taken in the 2023 NFL draft.

Draft sites project Scott to be taken anywhere from the fourth to seventh round of the upcoming draft, with some suggesting he won't be drafted at all.  It means the Combine will be particuarly important to Scott as he tries to convince NFL officials that he has NFL talent.

Coincidentally, on Wednesday, NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith said he wants to get rid of the NFL scouting combine. Smith would like to replace it with regional pro days, potentially put on by the NFLPA. Smith detailed how the combine is intrusive.

Top front office executives, coaching staffs, player personnel departments and medical personnel from all 32 NFL teams will be on hand to evaluate the nation's top football players eligible for the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft.

The combine attendees will arrive staggered by position groups with Scott and the defensive backs among those due to start their activities in Indianapolis on February 28.

Scott was a member of the Cal secondary for six seasons, thanks to a redshirt season and the 2020 pandemic season that did not count against player's eligibility.

He played in 49 games with 28 starts over his final five seasons at Cal (2018-22). Scott had seven career interceptions, including three in each of his two final seasons.

He earned third-team All-Pac-12 honors from Phil Steele and Pro Football Focus while being selected honorable mention All-Pac-12 in a vote of the league's coaches as a 2022 senior.

Scott played in the 2023 Senior Bowl, so he must have shown enough in Senior Bowl workouts and the game to grab the interest of NFL personnel.

He is the latrest in a recent line of Cal defensive backs with pro aspirations.  Camryn Bynum, Elijah Hicks, Ashtyn Davis and Jaylinn Hawkins all played in the NFL in 2022, and Bynum and Hawkins were starters.
