Davis Webb to Be Named Broncos Quarterbacks Coach

Former Cal QB will be younger than the Denver quarterback he will tutor, Russell Wilson

Former Cal quarterback Davis Webb reportedly will be named the Denver Broncos quarterbacks coach, and at 28 years of age, he will be six years younger than the quarterback he will be coaching, Russell Wilson.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported the news on Thursday that Webb will be hired by new Broncos' head coach Sean Payton, the longtime New Orleans Saints head coach.

Webb won't be the youngest assistant coach in the NFL, but only a few are younger.

Webb was the No. 3 quarterback for the New York Giants this past season, behind Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor. Webb spent most of his NFL career on practice squads, but head coaches liked to keep him around to mentor young quarterbacks. He played in just two regular-season NFL games since being a third-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft.

He got his first playing time in November 2021 when he was with the Buffalo Bills, but only played two plays, both kneel-downs, in the final minute of a blowout Buffalo victory.

Webb got his only significant playing time this past season in a meaningless game after the Giants were locked into their postseason seed. In that December 8 game against the NFC champion Eagles, Webb was the starter and completed 23-of-40 passes for 168 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in a 22-16 loss.

Now he'll be asked to coach Wilson, an 11-year veteran entering his second season with the Broncos. Wilson posted career worsts in completion percentage (60.5), touchdown passes (16) and quarterback rating (84.4) in 2022.

Webb played his first three college seasons at Texas Tech from 2013 to 2015, but Patrick Mahomes was an emerging star for the Red Raiders in 2015, so Webb transferred to Cal for his final college season in 2016.

Webb threw 37 touchdown passes with 12 interceptions in Sonny Dykes' offense at Cal, which went 5-7 in Dykes' final season in Berkeley.
