Cal Football: Brian Driscoll Learned of Pac-12 Award While Changing a Tire

His parents texted him the news that he'd honored as the league's top O-lineman this week.

There was no formal ceremony for Brian Driscoll when he was named Pac-12 Offensive Lineman of the Week on Tuesday.

“I got a flat tire and I was trying to fix that and I got a text from my parents,” the Cal junior said. “A big surprise.”

Driscoll was feted for his work helping Cal roll up 669 yards in a 58-21 win at North Texas in its season opener on Saturday.

“I didn’t even know I was nominated for it or anything,” he said. “It’s really awesome. I would have won this award without my teammates — you can’t play offensive line with one guy. So really, that award went out to everyone on the O-line.”

Driscoll earned the award after grading out highest among Cal’s offensive lineman. He started the game at left guard then moved to center when Matthew Cindric was injured — just as he did a year ago.

Cindric’s status for Saturday is uncertain, so Driscoll could play either center or guard against the visitors from the Southeastern Conference.

Driscoll is one of five returning starters from an O-line that got consistency poor reviews a year ago. They needed to be better this year and they know it.

“I think the O-line played really well. I think that was a step in the right direction but we left a lot out there and we’re really excited to continue to grow this season,” Driscoll said. “We’re going to play a really good defense and we’re really excited to take on that challenge.”

Making a leap this season has been the Bears’ consistent mission.

“I think our goal this entire offseason, starting in winter as soon as (offensive line coach Mike) Bloesch came in, he told us, `We want to be the unit that wins games for this team.’

“I think that’s something that we’re going to continue to strive for every week.”

Driscoll, whose grandfather is Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Lance Alworth, said the Bears are excited to face an SEC opponent.

“Auburn has a really rich history. It’s really exciting to play against a big brand like that,” he said. “I remember watching Cam Newton when I was a little kid. It was a lot of fun.

"Now to be a college kid playing Auburn, it’s something that I don’t think a lot of people get to do.”
